The Importance of a Well-Stocked Pantry

A well-filled pantry is the base for making meals without needing recipes. Think of it as your own home grocery store, ready to be turned into a creative dinner. Instead of making a list of all the ingredients you need, I want to show you the steps to make your own pantry that fits your cooking style. Having a pantry that suits you also saves time: with all the important ingredients ready, it's easier to quickly make meals without the stress of needing to go to the grocery store at the last minute. If you're like me, you like going to the grocery store once a week to buy basics rather than shopping for specific recipes. I will talk about items that can last at least two weeks or more. Anything else I consider to be fresh ingredients.

Step 1: Assess Your Needs

Before You Buy Anything, Stop and Pause and ask yourself 3 questions.

1.     What are your favorite flavors?

Reverse engineer your favorite recipes. What are your favorite flavor profiles? If you're a fan of umami like me, consider stocking dried shiitake, soy sauce, or MSG powder.

2.     What is your Cooking Lifestyle?

Your pantry should reflect your actual cooking habits, not just aspirational ones. Ask yourself: how long do I like or can I spend in the kitchen? If you have very little time, you might want to include quick toppings and flavor boosters such as ready made bouillons. Consider how often you cook and for how many people, as this will define the quantities needed.

3.     How often to you like to grocery shop?

Your pantry should be tailored to the frequency of your grocery trips. If you shop often, your pantry may focus on perishable items, while a pantry catering to infrequent shoppers might prioritize non-perishable goods.

Step 2: Choose the Right Storage Solutions

1. Select the Ideal Pantry Space for you:

Selecting the perfect pantry space is essential for optimizing functionality. Ideally, it should be easily accessible, provide ample storage, and be situated in a cool, dry location. While the kitchen is the obvious choice, you can also store less-used items in other rooms.

2. Explore Different Storage Options:

Think outside the box when it comes to storage. Open shelves, clear jars, and airtight containers can all contribute to an aesthetically pleasing and efficient pantry. If you are a visual person, seeing the ingredient will help you use it. Channel your inner Marie Kondo and remove labels for a minimalist touch. Labeling your containers might help you stay organized and find items quickly.

Step 3: Stocking Up on Essentials

Take a look at what you already have in your pantry and know you need right away. For instance, these are my staple ingredients

• Carbs: jasmine rice, risotto, quinoa, spaghetti, potatoes

• Acids: yellow lemons, balsamic vinegar, apple cider vinegar

• Proteins: eggs, tuna, tofu, frozen fish

• Baking essentials: flour, baking powder, cocoa powder

• Fats: milk, olive oil, canola oil, coconut milk, toasted sesame oil

• Aromatics: dried garlic, herbes de Provence, pepper

• Salt: salt, soy sauce

• Sweeteners: honey, white sugar, brown sugar

• Sauces and broth: cornstarch, tomato sauce, pesto, ready-made stock (vegetable, beef, chicken, and mushroom)

• Umami: soy sauce

Remember to choose highest-quality ingredients in your price range for the best results.

Step 4: Personalize Your Pantry

Now, think about your favorite daily recipes: what ingredients do they have in common? Go back to the list from step 3 and add additional items. I also like to go beyond these classic categories by adding flavor boosters and toppings to the list.

1. Flavor Boosters (my favorite flavor is umami):

• Fish sauce

• Curry paste

• Parmesan cheese

• Sun-dried tomatoes

• Dried mushrooms: shiitake and porcini

• Dried herbs: mint

• Spices: smoked paprika, cumin, turmeric, cinnamon

• Agave syrup

• Mustard

• MSG powder

2. Toppings or finishing touches (I am really into crunchy things):

• Seeds: sunflower, pumpkin, black and white sesame

• Crunchy fried onions

• Panko breadcrumbs

• Nuts: almonds, walnuts

• Fleur de sel

3. «Break Out of Your Routine» Ingredients:

Finally, Staples don't have to be monotonous. Think about adding special ingredients to change your daily foods for a while. This can also be something seasonal or experimental. Adding some infrequent use and specialty items can spice up your everyday meals. For instance, mine at the moment are:

• Truffle oil

• Indian-inspired spices: turmeric, cardamom, cloves

• Lentils: Daal

Bonus: Special Occasion Pantry Ingredients

• Stocking for cooking as an activity: If you like to bake a cake or make a hot chocolate on a rainy Sunday – keep everything ready to enjoy a spur-of-the-moment activity.

• Stocking for ingredients which make you feeling better: Do you like soup when you are feeling blue? Have everything for a quick pick me up soup (or ice-cream!)

Step 5: Maintain and Improve Your Personalized Pantry

1. Continuously Improve Your Personalized Pantry:

Keep a list in your kitchen (I find Alexa very useful for this, but a post-it will do just fine) and add to your personalized pantry when you cook regularly with the same ingredient.

2. Implementing a Regular Pantry-Cleaning Routine and Checking for Freshness:

A pristine pantry is a happy pantry. Implement a regular cleaning routine to keep your pantry organized and free from clutter, ensuring it remains a welcoming and inspiring space.

Proper storage is key to preserving the freshness of your ingredients. Rotate items based on their expiration dates, and store perishable goods in airtight containers or in their optimal conditions.

3. Quick and Easy Recipes Using My Pantry Staples:

Pantry improvisation is a skill every home cook should cultivate. Embrace the challenge of creating delectable dishes using only the ingredients in your pantry. You may discover new flavor combinations and innovative recipes along the way. For instance, my Mint and tomato pasta is made entirely out of pantry ingredients.
